I know, I know....badLizard...sometimes you just don't feel it...and it's been a while...

What are we listening to here at lakelizardmusic? Oh my, where do I start...so much good music, so little time...:

Stacie Collins--blues rockin' harmonica playin' lady--besides being a killer vocalist/musician in her own right she hangs out with the likes of Jason and the Scorchers and Dan Baird, who in turn, hang out on her albums. The result is ...well, use your imagination...better yet, give it a listen, then buy it.

Bankie Banx--the owner of the #1 beach bar in the world, Dune Preserve in Anguilla has just released a new cd, Just Cool...the title says it all. Bankie has his own sound--it ain't just another reggae island cd...he has a growlin' voice backed with top musicians, a little soul and a little rockandroll...and some island sounds too. See you soon Bankie!

YellowJackets--everybody needs a little jazz every now and then, and I love these guys...the group that first exposed me to Robben Ford way back when...who still sits in on their cd's...just buy it, play it, enjoy it.

Chris Knight--songwriter who says what you wanted to say, but you didn't know how, or you ain't lived it yet...no smooth nashville production, just good songs...or should I say, not ruined by smooth nashville production?...I've got several of his cd's...

Stoney LaRue--if you've followed me for awhile, you know I'm a big fan of the late Cross Canadian Ragweed and Cody Canada...from what I understand, Stoney and Cody are cut from the same music mold and have similar sounds from out in Oklahoma...I had this on the stereo yesterday, and had 2 people comment, "who is this, I really like this music."

Kathleen Edwards--I don't know why, but I like it...this is a fairly new cd and is the second one of hers I have...kinda that old singer songwriter sound but not as sparse...i guess more ...I've heard her on the coffeehouse station on xm and on outlaw country also.

Dion--that's right Dion, as in Dion and the Belmonts, Runaround Sue, the Wanderer, etc...this guy is still around and playing a pretty nice version of the blues. Every now and then, a musician survives...ain't that something!

RIP Mark Armstrong-2012 Smile on us Please

The end of 2011 saw the passing of bluesman Mark Armstrong, pictured in the middle of the below picture. This was the only chance I had to jam with Mark, but it was a blast at the first Watertown Blues Jam. Mark believed in the pure blues, lots of slide, and the key of D. At this jam and our only meeting, Mark was playing away on a song and I thought, what the hell, I'll throw in a slide lick or two, which good or bad, I'm known to do. The stars must've been lined up right, 'cause when I hit those licks on my Gibson acoustic and a glass slide, playing through the pa system, they came out just right and cut through the mix. Mark looked down at his guitar, then looked around and saw me with the slide, nodded and smiled.

Good jam...nice guy...I'm so glad I got to have this experience of playing with Mark.

I met this lady on 7 mile beach in Negril...the mango lady...that basket probably weights 50 lbs or so and is full of fresh bananas, mangos, coconuts, and other goodies. This photo is from Caribbean Travel & Life magazine this month. Put me right back there.

This lovely girl is my right hand @ realWork. She makes my life livable on a daily basis (well, 3 or 4 days a week anyway)....and as you can tell, she's also a trendsetter...not really sure that hat is gonna catch on, but what do I know? Thanks for all you do, Kdawg!

Haven't done any river surfing (standup paddleboarding) these days 'cause I'm a wuss and it's cold. Yeah, my rock-hard abs are probably melting back into the way they were pre -SUP, but I'll be back....HA! Life itself seems to be like riding a wave these days-up, down and all around...sometimes you're on top of the wave, sometimes you're bouncing off the bottom, scraped from head to toe from the sand and rocks. Now that I think about it, life's always been like that...I may've had a breakthrough! Enjoy the peaks, learn from the scrapes...Life is Good!

Nothing like a big ol' moon on a freezing cold night to start your mind running...

Finally got the tree up!...special thanks to Charlie Brown for the assist!

...and if you're a reader here, you know I look at the sky a lot on the ride to realWork. What's hard to capture here is the fog/cloud bank that hangs over the area as you come into Smithville...the sunrise here isn't actually on the horizon, it's on the edge of that fog/cloud bank. In about 2 minutes, it was almost dark because I was inside of it...no sign of sun at all!

...just a nice framing for the sunrise...

What am I listening to these days? I don't know...a little of everything. I haven't bought any music in the last week or so...I've had XM on Classic Vinyl channel on the way to work and been enjoying the flash backs. Started the car yesterday and Whuppin' Post came on...followed by Back in the USSR...followed by Low Sparks of High Heeled Boys...and Bad Company. That will almost get me to work...and in a good mood!

If you've gotta little extra these days, help out a neighbor, a friend, or somebody you don't know. Your choice...I'm partial to the Second Harvest Food Bank here in Middle Tn.

That's not a halo over my head, just the ceiling of a round house...yes I'm smilin', 'cause things are going pretty good these days...I'm writing songs, living well and have good friends and family...and I try to be thankful for every one of 'em...let 'em know everyday how important they are in your life...appreciate what you got.

While it's not actually Thanksgiving Day yet, I've already had lots of thanksgiving it seems....not that I'm complaining, if anything, I'm expressing thanks! Since I will be working on Thanksgiving...you gotta get it when you can...although I have been offered an invitation to attend one more official family Thanksgiving dinner after work Thanksgiving Day, but I just don't think I could take it...whew, too much of a good thing.

That was a confusing opening statement wasn't it?

I was lucky enough to be invited by a close friend to be part of a Thanksgiving gathering last Saturday on the lake in east Tennessee. After a bit of reluctance on my behalf, I made the right move and joined in and sure am glad I did. They made me feel extremely welcome and part of their family. And fed me like they were fattening me up for slaughter!

Somebody still makes pies from scratch...coconut and chocolate...

...and rolls aplenty...Lambert's ain't got nothing on this group!

Thanks again...I am truly humbled to have been included.

Also, I finished up some homemade vegetable soup I found in the freezer...

On a lesser scale, realWork fed us pretty dang good on Tuesday...that pecan pie wasn't too shabby.

...and when I'm happy, everybody's happy at realWork...they appreciate Dunkin' Doughnuts up in the country!

On a sad note, I'll be missing all the Tday goings on down in Opp, Alabama, and sounds like the rest of my family will be there...Dangggggggg! But, the lizardkid is coming down from BG today, and we're gonna do a little running around and have some supprage tonight...looking forward to that.

Vegas 2011...lakelizardmusic had the fall stockholder/board of directors meeting in Las Vegas this year, coordinating the time schedule with Cigar Afficiandos 'Big Smoke'. Not unlike last winter when the meeting was held in Negril, Jamaica, coordinating with the annual 'Donkey Races.'

Unlike the 'stays in Vegas' ads you see on tv, this blog is more of 'this is what happened in Vegas' sort of blog. No one was hurt in the making of this trip, except perhaps Marie Osmonds' reputation. Lakelizardmusic was represented by myself, vegasDan (aka myrtleDan, one-eyedDan, reverendDan, discoDan, whiskeyDan, danPus, danTheman, etc), raceCar, and jimmyD.

In Vegas, you're never sure if it's a sunset or sunrise...

...not that it matters, unless you're taking medicine.

...a review update on Shelby Lynnes new music...very little production, just straight up natural music and vocals...which is Shelby at her best. I have read somewhere that she did all the vocals and music on this cd, which just adds to it. Shelby writes from her soul and she tends to lay it out there on this one. Some of it might be a little deep for some as a whole, if so, break it down and listen to a few songs at a time. There's a couple on there that really ring home with me, in particular "I Want to Go Back." Thanks Shelby...

If you've followed these ramblings, you know that I don't care for winter, but the skies this time of year always intrigue me. Some of natures finest art work...

I WANT TO BE VINCE GILL

As I start to let my mind wander down whatever path it chooses for this entry, I am giving my first listen to Shelby Lynne's brand new music, Revelation Road. How can you buy it before you listen to it? you ask. Well, it's Shelby and I like her music...on some level I identify...maybe it's the Mobile connection, the Alabama connection, or the brief encounter I had with her late one Fat Tuesday night at a bar in Mobile. 'Restless' is still one of my favorite cd's, but hell, they're all good, and all have their own direction. I'm on song 3, and I like the laid back, quiet, simple production/arrangements...could be pickin' at lakelizardmusic studios. Take one Shelby...

Let's talk about Vince Gill...don't you hate Vince Gill? Well no, he seems like a nice enough guy. I actually met him years ago, but back then seems kind of like a whirlwind now...there was a Thursday night gathering at the Station Inn loosely organized as 'Crucial Country' and all sorts of folks used to show up there. I think Vince was fairly new in town at the time, and it was the place to be...for a sideline watcher/frustrated songwriter/picker like me, it was the place to be. A place to meet and talk to songwriters, musicians, newcomers and legends...and hear always interesting music. This was I guess the early 80's...Peter Rowan always seemed to be the ringleader..."Pull over Pete"...guess I saw them too much, I still remember that story he told about working with Bill Monroe...who was there more than once...who else?...John Hartford, Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas (known then as Flux), Norman Blake, Ricky Skaggs, Doug Dillard, Roland White, John McKuen...just a few of the folks I can remember in and around that time...George Benson?...yeah, I know, I wouldn't believe it either. And the cool thing if you've never been in the Station Inn, or at least back then, the people on the stage were the people in the audience and enjoyed talking and hanging out with you.

Let's see, I'm rambling, oh yeah, that damn Vince Gill. Anyway, Vince turns out to have a 'somewhat' successful career...just kidding of course, he's got THE career. Hell, he's got THE talent...writin', singin', pickin'...does it all. Sumbitch even plays golf well and is mostly politically correct, or seems to be. Married to Amy Grant with seemingly endless happiness, mixing family and career...

And this brings me to the point of this ramblin' road and where I was headed to start with...this is why I hate/want to be Vince Gill...not for any of the above reasons, but for this: I just bought Johnny Winter's new cd, 'cause well, it's Johnny Winter's new cd, and Johnny hardly ever lets me down. And who the hell is playing on here with Johnny Winter?--you guessed it Vince Gill...with Johnny Winter. Lucky bastard! And this made me remember a couple of years ago when I saw Vince get up at the Belcourt and jam with Robben Ford. Lucky Bastard! Now Vince can hold his own on the guitar, but I wonder how it feels to him to be playing with these guys...what a great thing. Does he say, "Sumbitch, I am jamming with Johnny Winter?" Does he wake up and say, "wonder which one of my guitar heroes/legends I'll jam with today after breakfast at the Pancake Pantry?" Just wondering Vince...you lucky bastard...enjoy the ride!

Sitting here on the deck overlooking the lake, enjoying this beautiful day listening to some Joe Jackson (no relation to Michael.) Had an informal meeting of lakelizard local#1 last night...much discussed, but nothing resolved. I'm telling you my neighbors can smell when there's a keg being tapped. Good meeting...I'm just about over it.

Took off on the paddle board yesterday morning about 8 o'clock...what a great time...fog rising off the water, fish swirling the surface everywhere...enjoyed that for about 3 miles or so. Summer ain't over til I say it's over!

Lizardkid came over to spend the day with me and wound up trying the board for the first time. A chip off the old block, she did great kneeling and standing up and didn't fall...not as easy as it looks.

...and she took a ride on Li'l Blue the Seadoo...where did my little girl go?...gonna have to start calling her the lizardlady.

That's right...I still got realwork and I head there before the sun comes up...I ain't real proud of it either. But if you gotta have realwork, I got it good.

Oh yeah, now I bemember...the lizardkid went to Western Kentucky to dental hygiene school...apparently they can take teeth home to clean them. That just might catch on...

I have very few good things to say about fall...

...except the annual return of Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer...lakelizards love it!

...other than that, I'm afraid it'll be time to put up the ol' paddle board soon, what with the coming of damned ol' cold weather. I'm gonna stick with it 'til I can't stand it anymore, though, or head for somewhere warm.

Don't know much about all the other boards, but my ULI works good for me. Lakelizard recommended.

Crucial music....the kind you don't leave home without....more specifically, crucial LIVE music...you know, it's harder to get live music that sounds like something you really wanta listen to...everybody wants to capture it, a few do it once in a career...here's my list:

#1 : Johnny Winter And...Live...since the '70's when I first heard this on 8 track, and heard Johnny Winter scream, "rock n roll!!!!!"...and go on into JohnnyBGoode.. his version will almost make you forget the Stones version of Jumpin' Jack Flash...

#2 : Allman Brothers 'Live at Fillmore East'....Whuppin' Post....'nuff said....jammin jammin...

#3 : Marshall Tucker Band 'Where We All Belong'....saxophone and flute in southern rock with a jazz feel and Toy Caldwell thumbing that Les Paul...Mr Doug Gray on vocals ladies and gentlemen, Mr Doug Gray...shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!...jammin jammin...

#4 : Jimi Hendrix 'Live at Wiinterland'... this just released cd set is what brought this up...MAN...you can get the la te da set for $9.99...pass it by and get the whole set for $29.99 or whatever it is...multiple versions of jams and sets and history in the makin'...I've been a Hendrix fan for a long time, and this has got me excited about music again....wooooowwww!

CRANK IT UP and imagine what it would have been like to be there!

Ok...whew...hang on, I'm putting Winterland on while I finish this entry....

Ok...let's talk about Eric Lindell and 'West County Drifter'...nono, it ain't live...I'm through talking about that...I just stumbled across this the other day and bought it....I really like this! I'm hesitant to say much as I'm just getting into it...mostly guitar, standup bass, and snare...vocals.....catchy tunes, lyrics rhythms...looks like from his website he tours quite a bit and I think they'd be cooler than hell to catch in a little club somewhere...surely they'll come somewhere close to lakelizardland, or at least Nashville...I'm keeping an eye out and an ear open...if you hear, let me know....and Eric Lindell, if you're reading this, let me know when you're in the area. I like it. (whoops, there goes a saxophone...)

...meanwhile.

If you haven't heard me talking about it yet, Dune Preserve beach bar in Anguilla has just been named #1 beach bar IN THE WORLD by CNN Travel...and that's the lizardkid and me with Bankie Banx, the proprietor of that very bar...yes, no matter how you say it, "that's cool." Marshall Tucker Band: Searchin' For A Rainbow...a classic, ground level southern rocker...replacing an old copy...Toy Caldwell, George McCorkle and the rest of the boys bring it home...this is crank it up, feel good music.

Steve Cropper: Dedicated....even if you don't think you know who Steve Cropper is, you do...the classic rocker of the '60s onward til today...his contribution to music is legendary...thanks for including Dan Penn on this collection...another legend.

Mishka: Talk About...every day needs a little reggae based rock...take a trip to the islands...it ain't for everybody, but then I'm just taking care of me...and I like it!
