Elton John, Billy Joel, and Hbsongs
Long ago and far away a good friend of mine tried to convince me that the 'Piano Man' album by Billy Joel was good stuff. I stubbornly resisted and refused to listen with an open ear. Many, many years later, I still have that same album and it is one of my favorites. Of course, by now I have much more Billy Joel in a somewhat eclectic collection of music. Last night as I sat and enjoyed Billy Joel and Elton John on their 'Face to Face' tour, these thoughts went through my head. It was the first time for me to see either of these artists and ohmygod what a show it was! As they worked their way together and separately through hit after hit, lots of memories and flashbacks swirled through my head. (Cruising the backroads of south Alabama in an old Volkswagen beetle listening to Elderberry Wine, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, etc...etc...) From the opening lines "It's a little bit funny..." to closing "Sing us a song you're the piano man..." it was all good stuff. There was a jamming version of "Rocket Man" and a nice guest appearance of Felix Cavaliere to join with Billy Joel and band on a kickin' version of "Good Lovin'". I've never been a fan of the Sommet Center in Nashville as a venue for music, but last night the sound was superb. It was nice for Elton John to mention music greats Brenda Lee and Leon Russell, and Billy Joel made reference to playing the ExitIn years ago (though it sounded like he was quoting memorized references.) Both musicians were great entertainers in their own way, and their bands provided stellar backup...many times coming to the spotlight themselves. Definitely one of the best shows I've seen in a while...(and as a sidenote, one of the most expensive....but I'd do it again.)

You are the one who introduced me to Elton way back in the '70s....remember 8 track tapes & Ba-ba-ba-Benny & the Jets! Man, I would have loved to have been with you at that concert. Memories-yessiree. Did I apologize for not seeing you & NancyO when you were in Opp last week? So I am now. No excuse-it is what it is-and hopefully it is getting better every day. REALLY bummed about not seeing you. In other news, we had a baby Opp Alabama lizard make himself at home in my living room a few days ago. By the time I thought "I should take a picture" & found my camera, he had moved on. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him....just hope it's not while I'm in bed!
Your site gets better n better everytime I drop in! I love the songs, the pics, & esp what's going on with you at LakeLizard. I miss you. (Wow, have you thought about this-we are going to be great aunt Tracy & great uncle H? Oh wait, you already have that name!)
